Eating Dawn to Dusk Watch your hummingbirds go on a feeding frenzy before leaving the breeding grounds. They will feed often and intensely for days, a state called hyperphagia. Hummers start feeding as early as forty-five minutes before sunrise and they keep eating until dusk. Ornithologists calculated that this intensive feeding results in enough fuel to fly nearly 600 miles at 35 miles per hour.
