  • Missouri: First Graders Watching and Counting
We have many hummingbirds visiting our feeders. The males are fighting for rights and the females are enjoying a meal. We counted at least seven different hummingbirds. 4 males and 3 females are what we think we have. Many first grade eyes and they all don't see the same thing. We watched the birds for about 20 minutes around 1:00.
  • Florida: Hummer ID at Feeder
Class is trying to ID hummer sighted everyday 8 -11 am since school started 8/25/09
  • North Carolina: Daily Visits to Feeders
We have a wonderful outdoor classroom behind our school and I have 2 hummingbird feeders within a foot of my classroom in my garden area. My first grade students have been enthralled with the antics of the many female hummingbirds that have visited daily.
  • Missouri: Syrup Making is Math Lesson
We have store-bought feeders and we make the syrup as part of a math lesson. In first grade anything hands-on works well and they love making a mess. The measuring of sugar and water is always a coveted job. All of the children in the school enjoy the hummingbirds while they are here.
