Observations from Citizen Scientists:
Week Ending February 17, 2010

Asking questions: Read these descriptions from observers. What 3 questions would you ask these observers so you could better understand how hummingbirds survive the winter in the United States?

February 6: Henderson, Nevada
(36.09 N, -114.04 W)

Rufous hummingbird sighted at my sisters house. She said she has seen them all winter long. She has kept her feeders full and sees them everyday. We're wondering if they stay because of the food?

February 4: Lakeland, Florida
(27.97 N, -81.92 W)

A female rufous has been here since Jan.16th. She showed up shortly after our coldest spell of weather (our nightly temps were in the 30's for 11 days). It is unusual to have Rufous in this part of Florida.

February 2: Tuscon, Arizona
(32.22 N, -110.97 W)
Rufous arrived in our yard on Nov.7, 2009, and on Feb.2, 2010 is still living here. Haven't had a rufous overwinter here before.

February 2: West Palm Beach, Florida
(26.72 N, -80.07 W)
I have had 3-4 ruby-throated hummingbirds in my back yard since Nov. 1, 2009. I have three feeders up and they spend all day drinking and chasing each other or resting in my black olive tree.

For Your Journal: Each week, choose your favorite hummingbird sighting and record your thoughts in your journal.
