Observations from Citizen Scientists:
Week Ending May 9, 2012

Use your Journal: What thoughts and questions do you have when you read these selected reports?

05/07/12 Cooper, Maine
The first male hummingbird arrived along with many other migrating birds last night and early this morning here in Cooper, DownEast Maine.

05/07/12 Woodstock, Maine
I was on the deck above the feeder when two of them flew around my head and took off. I subsequently went down to the feeder level and took a photo through the glass door.

05/06/12 Eldora, Iowa
Submitting a picture of the hummingbird I first saw yesterday. It came back to sip nectar from the wild columbine, and perched long enough on the garden fence for me to get a photo.

05/06/12 Waukesha, Wisconsin
Saw my first hummingbird here since I moved here. Female at the feeder.

05/05/12 Welland, Ontario
Finally spotted a hummer in my yard - a male - the same date of my first sighting last year.

05/07/12 Burlington, Vermont
I observed a male ruby throat buzzing around the inside of a canvas covered "barn." It was clear that the little guy was having a feast on all the insects.

Many interesting sightings and observations are found in the "Other Species Sighted"

Lucifer:
04/15/12 Terlingua, Texas
Male Lucifer Hummingbird at my feeder. Female in nearby shrub. The ocotillo blooms are fading and the Lucifer finally showed up at 'home.'

Unknown:
04/11/12 La Habra Heights, California

Not sure what species this one is, but just loved the picture. (See Image of the Week in today's update.)
