Which Species?
If you spotted this hummingbird could you identify its species? What characteristics provide clues? Journey North tracks two hummingbird species: ruby-throat and rufous. Which hummingbird — if either — are you more likely to see? This week, explore how to use field markings to identify rufous and ruby-throated hummingbirds that visit your feeders.

Donna Stickrod of Chesapeake, Virginia solves the mystery: "My hummingbird has been identified as a female rufous. She has been here all winter and is still going strong despite recent snow and temperatures in the teens. She is very vocal and tries to chase larger birds away from the wax myrtle with her vocal sounds."
