Other Surprise Sightings
Week Ending April 9, 2014
It appears that strong southerly winds had the potential for carrying several ruby-throated hummingbirds north on March 31st. In addition to the female found in South Dakota we have two more sightings reported during that time.

Southerly Winds

Mount Vernon, Iowa: April 1, 2014
"We were caring for a hummingbird that had been caught by a cat. Sadly, the bird died after about 48 hours. I am still amazed that he was here in Mount Vernon at all, especially since there are NO flowers around here yet."
Susannah Maddock, Third grade teacher

Fremont, Indiana: April 3, 2014
"
At 7:30am I looked up into a dead tree and was both shocked and delighted to see a hummingbird resting there. I got the feeder out within 20 minutes."
Reporting again on April 4: "I have not spotted him since yesterday morning. The last 3 days were warm and breezy. Yesterday afternoon it began to rain from the east and was quite cold." Tina Boitet
