In the early spring migrating hummingbirds are starving for any source of high energy food. Plant nectars, the sugar-rich liquids most often produced in the nectary glands of flowers can provide what they need. Native salvias and other flowers that hold their blooms through the winter months, and early spring flowers along coastal areas are sources of sweet nectar.
