Male Guard
Hummingbirds need a safe place to perch. A perch gives a wide view for guarding territory or a spot for taking a break from nesting duties.

"It has been cold here and the male Ruby-throated hummers have been acting differently than in other years. Each has claimed a feeder and sits beside it for most of the morning until it begins to warm up. Throughout the rest of the day they chase each other as usual. I staple tree branches very close to the hanging feeders and they love it. I have at least 10 males, and the females are increasing in numbers daily." 05/30/15 Gowganda, Ontario
