Equinox
Sunrise Table
in UT (GMT)
The
sunrise times below are a clue to the approximate longitude
of each site. Print this page and use with
the Longitude Clues Worksheet.
The
table below shows the time the sun rises at each Mystery location
on March 20, 2008, the spring equinox. The time shown is NOT
the time of sunrise using the Mystery site's local time.
Rather, it gives you the time that it is at Greenwich, England when
the sunrise takes place at the specific Mystery Location. This is
known as Universal Time or Greenwich Mean Time ("UT"
or "GMT").
"Why
are dates included next to the times?"
If the Mystery Class' sunrise time in UT/GMT is earlier
than the 3/20 sunrise in Greenwich (06:02 AM), then the location of
the Mystery Class will be in the Eastern Hemisphere, east
of Greenwich. If the Mystery Class' sunrise time in UT/GMT
is later than the 3/20 sunrise in Greenwich, then
the location of the Mystery Class will be in the Western Hemisphere,
west of Greenwich. That is why we have included the dates
along with the UT/GMT. A sunrise time in UT/GMT that occurs on 3/19
is considered earlier than the 3/20 sunrise in Greenwich.
