Our classroom is a small room in the center of the school, next door to the other 4th grade teacher.

Our teacher is Ms. Katie and we have 15 students in our class.

We have many favorite books in our class. We like these genres: poems, fables, and historical fiction.

One of the favorite books read by some of the students in the class was The Giver by Lois Lowry.

The Book The Giver

Many of us really enjoy art class. At recess, we like to play soccer and hockey. In science, we like doing experiments with wires, batteries and magnets. We also really like to work with computers.

One of the languages we speak and learn in school came from the colonizers of our country. There are also many native languages spoken here.

Local children like to play mancala here. They also really enjoy playing soccer, on fields and on the beach. Lots of children here make kites out of paper bags to fly for fun. We hope you were able to learn a little bit more about us.

Our City

Our city of Maputo is located at the southern end our our country, along Maputo Bay (or Delagoa Bay), an inlet of the Indian Ocean. We are in the Southern Hemisphere.

Maputo is the capital city of our country, and has a population of more than one million people.

It was previously known by the name Lourenço Marques/Lourenzo Marques, after a Portugese explorer. Maputo is the largest city in our country.

Because of its waterside location, Maputo is an important international seaport.

Although Maputo is physically located in the province of Maputo, the city is a separate government entity called a "cidade".

The climate in our city is quite nice with mostly good weather. It is usually sunny out, but sometimes it rains. When it rains for many days, watch out for floods here!

Many people walk to get from place to place. When it is really hot out, everyone goes to the beach.

Some of the most famous foods from our region are bacalhao, camarao, feijao, matapa, and galinha grelhado.

Our Country

Our Country of Mozambique is located along the southeastern coast of Africa, and is shown in red on this map:

Our neighboring countries include Tanzania, Malawi and Zambia to the north; Zimbabwe to the west; and South Africa and Swaziland to the Southwest.

Our country was a colony of Portugal for almost five centuries, until we gained our independence in 1975. Our Portugese heritage continues today, however, in food, and many other aspects of the community. Although many local languages are spoken by the majority of people, Portugese is still the official language of the country.

The country is divided into 10 provinces , and 1 capital city with provincial status -- our city of Maputo.
