Our School

In our class we have 26 students from year 6 and 7.

Our school, Seaview Downs Primary School, is a public school in South Australia located on a hillside with a perfect view over the ocean and the city of Adelaide.

There are approximately 250 students in our school from Reception to Year 7. The school is built on Kaurna land, home to the traditional landowners, the Kaurna Aboriginal people. Our school was established in 1969 with a seahorse as our logo.

School begins at 8:45 a.m. and ends at 3:15 p.m. We have three buildings with classes in them and also a Canteen, Computer room, Library, Music room and Japanese room. All classes speak in English. We will soon be learning Japanese.

Students Students

We have two larger playgrounds, a smaller playground for the Reception classes and a fitness circuit for older students.

At our school, students participate in many interesting activities such as The Australian International Pedal Prix (an exciting 24 hour race for pedal powered cars--look at the video below), The Tournament of Minds (a problem solving program) and The Festival of Music, in which school choirs from all over South Australia participate in a huge concert. Our school has a netball court, a basketball court, a soccer pitch, a cricket pitch, a tennis court, and a football field (even though there is no footy team!)

Oh, our school has one other thing that's pretty cool -- we set up a pedal prix practice course. In the video below, you can see students practicing for the pedal prix here at school, while we search for a longer practice track:

We have an annual Sports Day where we participate in sporting events like sprints, hurdles, high jump etc. We have four house teams called Manya (Green), Tindu (Yellow), Karndo (Red) and Warri (Blue). These are Aboriginal words representing rain, sun, lightning and wind.

In class at the moment we are learning new skills. One small group of students from our class is producing a regular newspaper to distribute to interested students. Another group is having fun making toys with cams. Watch our cam toy in action in the video below:

Our City

Adelaide, with a population of 1.1 million people, is the capital city of our state, South Australia. It is a coastal city, located along the southern, central coast of Australia.

Today, as you can see in this photo, Adelaide is a beautiful city with an impressive skyline:

Adelaide has many beautiful parks but most of them are dry because we are in a drought. Currently, water restrictions allow us to only use drippers and hand held hoses and only for 3 hours per week. Adelaide has some scorching heatwaves during summer. In 2008, our city recorded 15 consecutive days above 35°C. On the 28th of January, 2009, Adelaide recorded the hottest day in 70 years at 45.7°C. In winter. Adelaide can also get fairly cold at around 5°C.

A major event each year is The Tour Down Under cycling race which attracts some of the best riders in the world.

Another major event in Adelaide is the Credit Union Christmas Pageant. This is a favourite tradition for families with hundreds of thousands of adults and children lining the streets.

Another major event is The Clipsal 500, which is an annual racing carnival for touring cars, the main race being the 500 km V8 Supercar race.

Our State

We are located in the state of South Austalia, which is along the southern central coast of Australia. Our state has over 1.5 million people. The majority of its people reside in the state capital, Adelaide, with most of the remainder settled in areas along the south-eastern coast and River Murray.

South Australia

South Australia (in pink)

South Australia is unique, because unlike many other Australian states, South Australia was founded as a freely-settled, planned British province, instead of being founded as a convict settlement. Official settlement began on 28 December 1836, when the state was proclaimed at The Old Gum Tree by Governor John Hindmarsh.

Our Country

Our country of Australia is located in the Southern Hemisphere. We have about 20 million residents, and as a continent we are considered the smallest of continents.

In February 2009, our country experienced terrible wildfires, widely damaging homes, forests and farmland, and causing many deaths to people and wildlife as well. Many have called these fires the worst wildfire disaster for decades. This is a map of the fire locations in early February.
