Sheffield – Our City
Sheffield is in the county of South Yorkshire, England. Its name comes from the River Sheaf, which runs through the city. It is one of the largest cities in England and was at one time very industrial. It was in the 19th century that Sheffield became internationally famous for steel production especially crucible and stainless steel. Many of the large steel production factories have now closed and there are only a handful of smaller works now producing steel.
Our school is on a hill overlooking Don Valley (the River Don) which once had the largest area of steel mills in Sheffield. The city is located within the valleys of the River Don and its four tributaries, the Loxley, the Porter Brook, the Rivelin, and the Sheaf and spreads over seven hills!. Now, an amazing 61% of Sheffield's entire area is green space, and a third of the city lies within the Peak District National Park. There are more than 200 parks, woodlands and gardens in the city and an estimated 2.5 million trees, giving Sheffield the highest ratio of trees to people of any city in Europe! |
