Teaching Suggestions
How Many Monarchs Are in the Picture? None!

Were you fooled?
All of the butterflies pictured here are called Queens. The Queen butterfly is found across the southern United States, so it can be confused with Monarchs there.

  • Take a close-up look at a these pictures of the Queen and the Monarch butterfly.
  • Make a sketch of each butterfly species.
  • How many differences do you notice between the two species?
  • Describe the ways two species are similar and different.
  • Now practice some more butterfly identification.
Both butterfly species were spotted this week in Texas by Mr. Fred Alley in San Angelo, Texas.
