What Can You Learn From a Single Sighting?
An observer sent this sighting from Lake Michigan's Mackinac Bridge:

"We had a delightful and unexpected viewing of a monarch butterfly! On Labor Day, our family participated in the annual walk across the Mackinac Bridge, the 5 mile, 522 foot high, suspension bridge that connects Michigan's upper and lower peninsulas. As we walked southward, we suddenly noticed we had a special companion flying just above us. It was a monarch butterfly, flapping occasionally, then gliding, gliding, gliding! It was a beautiful day with no wind and pockets of mist all around. It was like walking in the clouds. After a time, the monarch sped ahead and out of sight. What a wonderful surprise it was to discover a monarch butterfly crossing the Mackinac Bridge along with several thousand people!"

What can this single sighting tell you about one monarch's direction of travel, rate of travel, height of travel, and migration pathway?
