The Rocky Mountains, one of the Earth’s longest mountain ranges, stretch down through western North America from Alaska to New Mexico, more than 3000 miles (4800 kilometers). Rugged and massive, the Rocky Mountains form a nearly continuous mountain chain that varies in width from 70 to 300 miles (110 to 480 kilometers).
