International Travelers: Finding Safety at the Water's Edge
Up to 10,000 monarchs roosted at Canada's Presqu'ile Provincial Park on the north shore of Lake Ontario last Thursday evening. "Presqu'ile" is a French word that means "nearly an island." The Park is on a peninsula that juts out into Lake Ontario. Monarchs commonly cluster on this peninsula during fall migration. They avoid crossing Lake Ontario unless the wind and weather are right. The butterflies may have to travel around the lake instead! These Canadian-born butterflies are at least 2,000 miles from their winter home in Mexico.
Look at a map and trace their possible pathways.
