How does basking help monarchs get ready for take-off?
These monarchs are warming their flight muscles by basking in the sun. Notice how they spread their wings to capture the solar radiation. Monarch butterflies can not fly until their flight muscles reach 55°F. If it's sunny, monarchs can warm their muscles to the 55°F flight threshold by basking.
