Surprising Sighting
"My friend, Captain Gerald Turan of the shrimp boat Predator, reports that he observed a number of Monarchs resting and nectaring on an 'island' of water hyacinths in the Gulf of Mexico about 20 miles due south of Vermillion Bay of Louisiana. The water hyacinths grow in inland waters like ponds, canals and bayous, but are washed out to sea sometimes. He saw the butterflies on Sunday 10/21. The wind was out of the north and a front was passing through the area." Susan Bannister, Monarch Waystation 1944, Kenner, LA
