Too Late to Migrate?
In order to fly, monarchs need temperatures
of at least 50°F when sunny and at least 60°F when cloudy. Cold fall temperatures mean late-migrating monarchs are less likey to reach Mexico. However, they can travel quickly when conditions are favorable. A monarch was tagged on October 9, 2008 in New Jersey and recovered on October 12th in Georgia. The butterfly had traveled 558 of miles in three days.
