Fall Migrants?
These fresh monarchs — at latitude 45°N in Minnesota on August 17th — may be among the first of this fall's migrants. A shift occurs in the north in mid-August. Monarchs emerge from the chrysalis in diapause and become the first members of the migratory generation. Randy Klauk counted 8 monarchs nectaring intensely on this Joe Pye weed on Sunday.
