This October 17th weather map shows the wind and temperature pattern that's persisted for most of the month. Notice the south winds and unseasonably warm temperatures across the eastern U.S. and as far north as the Canadian border. Monarchs can't afford to fly with a headwind — it's too energy intensive — so the migration has been moving southward slowly.
