Students' Answers to Challenge Question #3

Challenge Question #3 asked, "Where do you think monarchs get the water they need to survive the dry season in Mexico? How many sources of water can you imagine?"

  • 7th grade students from Pleasant Grove Middle School in Rescue, CA. think that the butterflies would get their water from the morning dew that collects on the trees and other objects. With dew collecting there would be many sources of water for the butterflies!
  • Isabella: Monarchs probably get their water from either water in the foods (nectar, fruits) that they eat, or people may give it to them in water troughs at the sanctuary, or maybe they store it in their bodies from when there was water, or maybe they get it from little drizzles. Or maybe, they don't need a lot of it.
  • Courtney, Jamie and Nathan: From leaves of grass or flowers. Or some places have feeders for butterflies for them to get water. They could also find like a water source like a creek or lake.
  • Mrs. Nunnally's second grade class at Peter Woodbury School in Bedford, NH
thinks that monarchs get the water they need to survive in the dry season
from melting snow and ice or from a pond or lake.
