Why are the monarchs going to the northeast?

It's easy to see why spring vegetation could be a barrier when viewing this satellite image of the Eastern United States in April. Notice the line where spring green-up has occurred. Keep in mind that the prevailing winds blow from west to east. Now imagine the monarchs pushing northward — but encountering this limit of vegetation growth — and so moving to the northeast with the help of the wind.
