This week's easternmost sighting was in Brentwood, TN more than 950 miles northeast of Eagle Pass, TX. In contrast, the monarchs have only advanced 500 miles northward if we measure to the northernmost monarch at latitude 36 North in Kingfisher, Oklahoma. The orange arc on the map above shows where monarchs would be now if they had spread equally in all directions upon entering Texas. Had they flown directly northward, for example, monarchs would be in Nebraska now!

  • Why are the monarchs going to the northeast at this time of year?
Think about these two clues: 1) temperature and 2) spring vegetation.
