Watch Out Little Monarch!
This tiny larva hatched on Saturday in Pennsylvania. It's in its first stage of growth, called the "first instar." Fewer than 10% of monarch eggs survive past the first instar stage. Therefore, it's OK to collect and raise monarchs indoors. You will be protecting them from their enemies. "I call the eggs I collect rescued eggs," says Texas naturalist Carol Cullar.
