Update Dust is Rising
Journey North

The mountains' volcanic dust is as fine as baby powder. People often cover their faces with a bandana so they can breathe. Dr. Lincoln Brower is concerned about the effect on monarchs, too.

"Tourists stir up the dust. It's bad for the butterflies because it clogs their spiracles." Spiracles are the respiratory openings on the monarch's body.
