This picture of a red-winged blackbird was taken in the spring. To defend its territory— and later, a group of nests — a male redwing spends lots of time perched on top of cattails. He watches for predators and makes alarm calls to keep other males off his territory. When he is agitated, he exposes red epaulet feathers.
