Signs of Spring: Observations for April
  • Perham, Minnesota 04/29/11
Saw the usual flock of American White Pelicans flying in their circle formation, heading NW. They had a good day for flying, as the winds are gusting up to 40 mph and clear skys.
  • Plaster Rock, New Brunswick 04/30/11
A white-crowned sparrow was at the feeder today and since they are a passing through species on their way farther north it is certainly a sign of spring.
  • Schnecksville, Pennsylvania 04/28/11
Observed a male rose-breasted grossbeak at my feeder. I think there was also a female, but it took me awhile to ID them in my book...and by then they were gone. They came again, the next day. Haven't seen a RBG in many years!!

  • Grimsby, Ontario 04/27/11
The direct flow of the jet stream out of the south continues to bring warm temperatures and large numbers and flocks of migrant birds into Southern Ontario. At the Niagara Peninsula Hawk Watch at Beamer, Ontario, on the Niagara Escarpment today

  • Ortonville, Michigan 04/27/11
Saw our first male and female Rose-breasted Grosbeak. Usually the males are here a week or so before the females but they were both here today. Quite unusual for them to be here this early, from our past experience. Looks like I had better put up the hummer feeders.

  • Hines Creek, Alberta 04/27/11
One of my students brought me crocuses and pussy willows today!

  • Chardon, Ohio 04/26/11
Just a few hours ago I posted my first sighted rose breasted grosbeak. After my posting he was joined by five more males! Quite a site at the feeders! Welcome back

  • Selkirk, Ontario 04/25/11
Barn Swallows and Tree Swallows arrived at Peacock Point Ontario.

  • Penobscot, Maine 04/26/11
Ospreys and Eagles are back shedding light on this den past iniquity. Flowers have swung into bloom, and temperatures are now up to the mid-to-late fifties. Sometimes even reaching the early sixties. It's almost May so hopefully we are in for another warm summer this year!

  • Palm Bay, Florida 04/22/11
I observed an adult, female, Giant Swallowtail Butterfly laying eggs on my Hercules Club Tree. I was very happy!
