Back to This Week's Update

"Shageluk, Alaska, is in a cool spot because several flyways converge right around where we are," says teacher Joy Hamilton. "We get Pacific birds, Central birds, and Mississippi birds. Our first migratory bird we usually get are Bald Eagles and Peregrine Falcons. We're not sure where the Eagles come from, possibly the Aleutians or around Anchorage which would be the Pacific Flyway. We get our Geese and Songbirds from the Mississippi and Central Flyway. I still can't figure out where the Peregrines come from, I thought Florida. Rusty Blackbirds nest here, too, and come from the east coast. We also get an occasional Asian bird (rare!)."
