Thirsty Robins Shared a Drink in Virginia

"They discovered my heated bird bath and I photographed 8 at one time enjoying the water while the outside temperature was still well below freezing," wrote an observer in Virginia. Drinking water is important for robins all year round. Flying is thirst-making exercise! Robins travel in large flocks during the winter. It's helpful to have so many eyes searching for food and water. Many more robins wait in nearby trees for their turn at the birdbath.

You would never see so many robins sharing a bird bath like this during the summer breeding season, when robins become territorial.
