Food Hunt

"As soon as it was light outside I saw a flock of robins looking for food in the grassy areas of my snowy yard." Roger in Battle Creek, MI (March 22, 2014)

"At least a couple dozen robins are hanging out in a grassy area. It doesn't look like they're interested in the apple tree there, even though plenty of little fruits are left." Wayne in Minneapolis, MN (March 24, 2014)

The first migrating robins are males. When a robin awakes at first light, he is hungry! He immediately starts searching the ground for worms or insects. The berries and fruits still sticking to trees after the long winter aren't so tasty anymore. Robins will eat them now if they can't find anything better. Fortunately, right when they need it the most, the ground starts thawing and earthworms are coming up in soil and under the leaf litter.
