“11 de Julio”, Elementary
This school is located in
Palo Amarillo Community which borders on the neighboring state of México, surrounding the “Sierra Chincua” Sanctuary.
Estela arrived at the school on another cold, wet morning, about 5°C. There are rather few cold days during the winter season here when instead of playing outdoors for recess, teachers look for ways to play games indoors. In general, clothing and shoes are not very warm and waterproof for this weather.
Estela first went over the migration phenomenon of monarchs that overwinter in Central México in the nearby mountains. She told them that the monarchs they see are the ones escaping from the terrible cold winter in the North.
Children volunteered to come to the front of the class and show the monarchs' 4 main stages in their life-cycle.
Next the children wrote their response letters. They enjoyed this indoor activity.
On this cold day, anxious mothers arrived early to ask teachers whether children were warm enough, in spite of wearing their warmest clothes to school.
Finally the children received their Ambassador Letters. They were so excited to receive their gifts that it felt just like Christmas/New Year!
Many of them asked whether monarchs can stand the cold weather and snow that may come to our mountains. They opened their eyes and mouths wide when they heard that monarchs' wings are water-proof, and our tall, strong Oyamel trees create this special micro-climate for protecting them; oh so much talk that we sometimes loose track of time!
