Symbolic Monarchs in Mexico

Consuelo R. de Fernández Albarrán Elementary 3rd Grade
This school is in the town of San José del Rincón, the closest town to the “Sierra Chincua” Sanctuary, at only 10 km. distance.  Journey North visits this school for the first time, finding it necessary to reach the children of this town, whose families have made a living from ploughing their lands and from their forests’ resources since ancient times. Children and teachers were incredibly delighted to have Journey North visit them!

Estela visited on a very cold day, between -3, -5°C. A rather thin cover of ice covered the grass and bushes all over around the forests of the Sanctuaries.

This is the oldest elementary school in the region. This town is now very, prosperous has activated eduacation at all levels in a very important way, and industry is outstanding.

Estela first taught the children about the monarchs' migration routes and their life cycle stages. They then worked at writing their letters. All children and teachers really thrilled to see three countries are the Official Sponsors and Guardians of the Monarch Butterflies Habitat.  Incredible for them to see that their letters could be written in English and Spanish! They asked Estela to read aloud in English while they followed the Spanish writing simutaneously!

During break time the children played games, and some of the girls played with their dolls.
