Symbolic Monarchs in Mexico

Francisco Villa Elementary 4th, 5th, and 6th Grades
This school, Francisco Villa, has a considerable population of indigenous children. Many of these children can speak a little of their parents’ dialect, called Mazahua.  A big extension of this region, is officially recognized as the most important Mazahua settlement in our country. Lots of traditions, beliefs and customs prevail in their lives.

The teachers and students were astonished at the fascinating aspects of the monarch life cycle, and how important our region is for survival of the monarch. They warmly appreciated this first visit and look forward to next year.

Every thing spoken in the lesson is new for children and teachers.  Children were amazed and stupefied at hearing about monarchs' metamorphosis process.

At this school, for the first time, students asked Estela not to make photos of them writing their response letters:  "We want it to be a big surprise for them".

In the school yard a donated bus is all that is left of an old library, which up to a few years ago was in use. We were able to give the students donations including a chess game and Nezahualcóyotl book.

After school moms waited for their children.  Every one from the school reaches home by walking.  Seldom a child in our communities will ride a bicycle. Bikes are a luxury and it is not economically possible for parents to buy a bicycle for all of the children in the family.

Children enjoy their walk home each day. Many of them were seen running, shouting, and playing with each other along the way.
