Symbolic Monarchs in Mexico

Miguel Hidalgo Elementary Grades 4th 5th 6th
Like many of the communities on this side of the Sierra Chincua Sanctuary, the people here are indigenous and the school is officially considered an indigenous school. Some children can still speak some Mazahua dialect taught by their parents and grandparents, but tend to loose their dialect due to lack of educational programs encouraging their preservation. It is not clear exactly the benefits an indigenous school gains from the State, or government once it is considered an indigenous school. It would be great if indigenous and language programs would be applied for schools like Miguel Hidalgo.

Estela came upon this school by accident! While she was looking for a school further on the road she came to Miguel Hidalgo where the teachers welcomed her in once she described her mission for Journey North and the monarch butterfly.

The children and teachers were thrilled with the presentation. Once the lecture about monarchs was over, they were indeed touched. All were very interested in the topic, and Estela could almost hear them saying, "Why hadn't anyone told us before about all this? Why don't we hear or see anything about all these vital facts about monarchs and how they are at risk?

Some of their letters and butterflies came from far, far away in Kaiserslautern, Gemany! It was delightful to see the projects reach from so far away to this new community in the mountains so near the "Sierra Chincua" Sanctuary in México! Estela was thrilled to share their Ambassador butterflies and explained how far away — in a European country that their letters traveled. They discussed how the Symbolic Monarchs were put in a plane in Germany, traveled to America, and then, traveled in another air plane to reach the far away México... Everyone was astonished!

Good bye to Journey North!  As Estela was leaving all the children showered her with one single question, "Teacher Estela, will you come back next year?.  That we are so far will not be a reason not to see you again?.
Of course I hope I will see you as long as children in the North send symbolic butterflies and letters next year!," --
She told them.
