Symbolic Monarchs in Mexico

Emiliano Zapata Elementary Grades 4th 5th 6th
School here started at  9 a.m. in the morning. You can see Rocinante, Estela’s mighty little Volkswagen, that carried all the Symbolic Butterflies up mountain roads to the school, is parked outside the school walls.

As with all the school children, Estela began her lesson explaining the monarch life cycle.  The students were simply amazed at hearing Estela tell the incredible metamorphosis process of an egg becoming a  a caterpillar and then becoming an adult, flying monarch.  Also they were amazed to learn that an adult monarch only eats at the caterpillar stage and never again in its life, except for water and nectar. These facts left the students frozen, and astounded.

The students took great care and had great fun writing their letters that will go back to their counterparts in the United States and Canada.

The books they are displaying with pride were donated by Monarchs Across Georgia.

Once again, the children up here in the Sabaneta Community had a hard time believing that the Ambassador butterflies and the letters they carried came all the way from Canada and the United States! They shouted and jumped and showed off to each other.  They immediately rushed over to Estela asking how this exchange worked. Estela then told them that through the photographs she was taking of them the children who made the butterflies and letters will meet them through the internet on Journey North! It was so exciting to them!

Outside the children proudly wanted to show their new friends in the North the upper mountains in front of them, just surrounding their homes. It is there on the hillsides where the butterflies are overwintering at the "Sierra Chincua" Sanctuary, no more than 3-5 km. away.

The gifts included in the Symbolic Butterflies were a big hit. Children were all jumping and rejoicing at opening their letters and receiving their gifts, that they just forgot Estela was there! She decided to creep back silently, and agreed with their teacher she would be back next year!
