Symbolic Monarchs in Mexico

EducaciĆ³n y Patria Elementary Grades 4th 5th 6th
Children were astonished to learn about the monarch life cycle. They were fascinated to hear all about the caterpillar stage ,and the way the chrysalis stage begins and what happens inside when the butterfly is formed.  "Not to believe", they silently say to themselves.  They also cannot believe how this generation here, in their own forests, plays such an important role in the survival of the species. Then how the female - already pregnant - flies north to lay eggs and create the first of several generations that will live before returning next winter to the sanctuaries in the mountains of Mexico.

Estela loves to captivate the students describing the process of migrantion, then the metamorphosis cycle, or the other way around. “ It is like a fairy story”, she tells them, “Pay close attention other wise you can get lost and not really get all the sense of the story.”
You cannot believe how closely students pay attention to Estela!  Many times teachers ask for applause when she finishes!  Afterwards comes the golden moment for them to receive their letters and gifts!

Students liked writing their letters and telling their counterparts in the North about their friends,  school and family.  They decorated their letters with drawings showing their surroundings - the way they dream they want to keep it in the future.

* Note: This school is located at a very near site where an important illegal logging was just made last November (Such facts like this were not mentioned at all at the schools visited in this area).  Journey North is striving, in a very cautious way, to let children, families, and teachers know the high importance of preserving monarchs habitat.  However, no child, no teacher seemed to show interest in speaking about this very considerable illegal logging just made last November.
