Symbolic Monarchs in Mexico

Vincente Guerraro Elementary Grades K-6th
This community, as the communities just visited in the week “San Jerónimo Pilitas” and “Pancho Maya”,  have no direct, --not even indirect—link to any activity or benefit regarding the Sierra Chincua Sanctuary just at their back of their land territory.  They know it and just respect it.  Their living is oriented to agricultural activities.
It is 9 o'clock in the morning and all mothers are waiting for teachers to open the door.
At this school two young boys –sons of teachers of the school, live at the school during the 5 week days, and leave on Friday afternoons back home to their homelands, usually a far distance.  Mothers generally provide them with cooking and with washing their clothes for a symbolic payment.  Government, of course pay their salary.  There are not special salaries for teachers staying at the communities, like in this case.  They should choose whether to take the chance of the job in such places or not, under their own convenience.  An average salary for an elementary school teacher should go around 7,000-8,000 (seven thousand to eight thousand, --at the most--) pesos monthly.

In this case, this is a uni-grade school. A teacher is in charge of the kindergarten group.  The other teacher teaches elementary from 1st. to 6th. grade.

Nowadays most mothers do not fail to bring their children to school. They realize how important education is.  However, because it is a little cold this morning, and because it is Friday, a few children are absent.

The moms were delighted to hear the reason of Estela's visit and were glad to welcome her.  Estela took the immediate advantage to start telling the mothers  about Journey North’s purpose of the visit.  She shared about generalities of the wonder of monarchs and of the great importance of preserving this region's natural resources. This had to be right then and right there; having invited mothers to come into a classroom to join their children's "lecture" would have made them feel very shy and they would have not accepted.  Estela decided not  to make them feel uncomfortable by asking one of the teachers to shoot some photos.  They might have not liked it.

The students have now listened to Estela's talk.  They would have never imagined monarchs were such a strong and brave insect. As they listened to Estela about monarch metamorphosis, they exclaimed: "Wooow"! "Noooo"! "It is like not real!"

The children had lots of fun writing their response letters.  The youngest children are hardly able to write, but their teachers asked to let them express themselves with drawings in their letters.   Teaches actively supported the youngest ones to at least write their names on their letters
