Symbolic Monarchs in Mexico

Benito Juárez Elementary Grades K-6th
Benito Juárez is a uni-grade (multi-age) school like others in this region. The main reason for these schools to keep classified as uni-grade, is that the community has very few children attending and the education system cannot consider hiring/paying a teacher for a group of two-to-three children. The school system considers assigning a teacher per a group of minimum 15 children.
This is a school, where Journey North has now visited several times over the year. We still feel it necessary to keep on teaching children in these locations, so near to the core of the Sanctuary, about the importance of the preservation of our ecosystem. The school continues to be a multi-grade school.

On the way into the forest to reach the mountains where the school is, such signs are hanging, informing about forest activities recently done in the area.

Rocinante the mighty Volkswagen and Estela travel to reach the school.

Once we arrived and began our lessons, the children became fascinated studying monarch life-cycle.

Most of the children choose to draw the way they envision preserving monarch habitat for the next decades, and the way they want to see the lifestyle for families surrounding the sanctuary region. They work hard with their drawings so they reflect these ideas their counterparts in the North.

Students were excited about the donated books from Monarchs Across Georgia.

Everyone loved receiving their letters and gifts that were packaged inside their Ambassador butterflies.  They couldn’t believe that these letters flew that long way, first by plane, then by car from México City, and finally, into their hands!

Shouting, “Estela!,” they wait for Journey North to visit them next year!
