Symbolic Monarchs in Mexico

Telesecundaria El Rosario School
This is the only Middle school level at the community created about 20 years ago, with a current population of about 300 students. Most of the families to these students have relatives that help them from the US, and México City. They earn a living through forest benefits and from jobs related to the Monarchs and the Sanctuary.

These students will be ready for high school next year. Half of them might continue studying a professional career at the university-level school only 30 km. away. This is different from what it used to be 20-30 years ago, when only 5 out of 100 students attended high school.

In the assembly messages of conservation were delivered to students. They discussed migration routes for Monachs, life cycle and healthy forest and canopy. This is so important because of the storm and the illegial logging.

Questions and answers among students themselves with and for Estela, were brought up:
“Estela, do you think that the population dropped significantly after last March’s storm at our Sanctuaries?”

“How much do you think the population could have recovered in the Monarch Generation which has just arrived here?”

"Did they have in the North a similar weather phenomenon as we had last March?

“We and our families worry about such a terrible weather situation coming back this season…”

Gifts received by children are displayed, and during recess time many games are enjoyed that combine fun with arithmatic.

A group of students from 2nd. “C” group presented the performance of a poem “ALAS PRODIGIOSAS” (“Prodigious Wings”) written by the students themselve. The poem speaks about Monarchs leaving their northern lands and facing great challenges on their migration south. It included how the Monarch has opened a whole new world for our region and our people. It was directed by one of their teachers, professor Salomón Caro Silva, and supported by all the rest of the school students and teachers. They presented it in chorus; it was simply moving and amazing.
