Symbolic Monarchs in Mexico

Jaime Torrres Bodet Middle School - Grade 2
This middle school is one of two middle schools in the region surrounding “El Rosario” Sanctuary. Its population is of nearly 200 students.

At every public school in our region education is totally for free for parents and students. Parents only buy special school supplies for their children such as notebooks, pens, pencils and uniforms. Text books are all provided free by the state.

Teachers are of course paid by the state as well, under an average of 9-10 thousand pesos monthly for a working schedule of 9-13 hrs. Parents occasionally may be asked by the director and teachers at a school (either elementary, middle or high level public schools) to provide a very low financial support when an extraordinary need arises for the school, such as a celebration of a special event, or so material need at the facilities basic for the students’ well being. Such fees should be 10-20-30-50 pesos, and will very rarely exceed 100 pesos. This amount is sometimes difficult for some families from this rural village to contribute.

Middle school students take English classes as part of their education at this level.  The  moment they receive their Ambassador Monarchs, it is amazing how happy they feel trying to read every single word written in English in their symbolic Monarchs and letters!  Those words they do not know, they ask Estela Romero!  Many times they do not distinguish at all when a word is the name of a city or site and try to figure out for translation!.  Hearing them reading English loud is such an experience!  Most of them express they would love to learn and speak much more English every day.  They only have 1 hour English class, four days a week.
