Symbolic Monarchs in Mexico

Igncio López Rayón Elementary School
Igncio López Rayón Elementary school is located in "Rancho Escondido", Community, of Ejido El Rosario.

This school has a population of around 100 students who will later attend the Middle school at the same community.  Most students in the region mostly reach high school level and then, a minority (10-20%) may be able to continue University studies. The fact that closest University level schools we have in the region are in Zitácuaro City, about 1.5 hours from any town or community in our region, plus personal and school expenses makes it not easy for every family to support their childrens superior studies, so, many of them choose to go to work to big cities living with relatives there, once they end high school studies in their locations.

In the classroom, the lesson included going over and reminding students about migration and the unique nature of our forest to have been chosen by Monarchs to overwinter in our region. At every school, different questions and comments arise from students.  Many know about facts related to Monarchs, but the fact that our educational programs are so much “indoors” at schools, keeps them somehow a little away from the nature facts that surround us. This makes every visit by Journey North to them a very important approach to their own natural surrounding making them reflect about countless aspects of our life and dependency on our own regional-local ecosystem. Students all had rapt attention to pictures and talk.

Writing and decorating their letters of response to their friends living in North America and Canada the students wished they could make the perfect drawing for them! They also wondered what could impress the students in the north the most to see in their drawings!
