Symbolic Monarchs in Mexico

Consuelo Fernández Albarrán Elementary - Fourth Grade
Today it is December 12th, the second more important day of the year for the Catholic community in México due to the dogma of the divine apparition of the Virgin of Guadalupe after the Birth of Jesus Christ.  At most homes in our region, as in all over México, most families spent the whole night before this day, singing, praying and placing flowers to its image as part of our traditions.

Monday, opening school activities on the first day of the week among a really cultural and educational athmosphere with traditional Mexican dancing by the students at the school, and even parents being part of it showing signs of the values built up in every family as part of the bringing up of their children. No religious reference at all in schools to our religious fest outside, since our education in México shall be secular by constitutional decree.  Chirstmas and New Year’s events are allowed to be referred to at schools, though.

Children participating more than enthusiastic and encouraged going over what has been learned in our previous visit last year for the first time on Monarchs life-cycle, Migration facts and challenges. Many of them crowd to the front hardly accepting that two or three of their classmates are enough to hold photos for the rest to observe and discuss and reflect!.

Most of them do know about the importance of a healthy forest for Monarchs habitat and for the equilibrium of our ecosystem, but almost none was really conscious of the importance of an abundant an healthy canopy all around as part of this equilibrium and as part of the Oyamel tree surrounding for a healthy growth, as shown in one of the photos.

The child with the sign hanging from his neck reading “Promotor de la Paz”, together with other graders, are in charge of promoting this value during the week at their classrooms. Every week, a different value should be promoted all over the year.

Most children, inspired in the reflection of the presentation this season, on the meaning of a healthy forest and canopy, ask to decorate their letter with the way they want to see a nature surrounding in the future, for them and their families.

Classrooms receive gifts books, "Malala" and "Ana Frank" books for reading with their teacher.
