Symbolic Monarchs in Mexico

José María Morelos y Pavón - 3rd, 4th, 5th Grades
This school, in the Community, Ranchería Las Rosas, is located near sanctuary Sierra Chincua.

This is one of the very few indigenous schools surrounding the Sanctuaries, where both students and teacher are still bilingual.  They are a Mazahua Community still keeping many of their traditions and their mother language alive.  Their teacher is native Mazahua still and congratulations have been offered to him on behalf of the Program JN for trying to keep in the children the Mazahua language alive at the school.  The rest of the practice they do at home with their parents and grandparents.

Children going over what was learned last year, reminding many facts about Monarchs’ life and Migration aspects.  Then, learning about ideal forest conditions for the Oyamel tree’s growth, and for the habitat of Monarchs.  The damaging facts of the atypical storm last March are indeed recalled by them, and brought to reflection, together with the possible ways to relieve this over the coming time.

These children living in the surroundings of Sanctuary Sierra Chincua, similar to the rest of the children visited at every school, feel genuinely co-responsible on the preservation of Monarchs’ habitat, and start structuring their letters to be sent to their counterpart students in US and Canada, in a highly enthusiastic way!.

Their teacher gets automatically involved in supporting on the letter’s content, reiterating how important it is to have this education today as part of their academical and personal bringing up.

A girl, chosen from the whole enthusiastic group to come to the board and showing the script of the word “butterfly” in Mazahua, her mother language. Many children in the classroom, besides decorating their letter with a portrait of themselves as a butterfly, wrote this word itself in Mazahua, besides some other words in the native language, such as father, mother, grandpa, grandma, hom
