Symbolic Monarchs in Mexico

Niños Héroes Elementary, Grades 3, 4, 5 and 6
Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla Elementary is located in La Rosa de Palo Amarillo", Community, Ejido Palo Amarillo, State of México. It lies in the second belt sheltering surrounding territory to "Sierra Chincua” Sanctuary. Children’s families in this community located at only a few kilometers (5-7 km.) from the core area of the “Sierra Chincua” Sanctuary, live from agriculture, cattle raising and forest benefits. They have no participation at all in the Monarchs’ world activities.

Children indeed showed a real concern about the conservation of their surrounding and participated mentioning many ways to conserve their region’s natural resources at whatever cost.  They show themselves really proud to know they will be the future owners of their land and are everyday learning from their parents and grand-parents how to do it.

At every school, children show themselves really noisy about the way Monarchs’ living conditions are while reproducing in North America.  They cannot believe you in the North have no Sanctuaries there! Most children, teachers and people in general think that Monarchs in North America live exactly in the same conditions as they overwinter here!  They get surprised to get to know that the life cycle there and their habitat conditions are absolutely different as Estela explains to them!

Children here are very aware of the importance of forest conservation in the region for the Monach Butterflies and our own survival.  They were very proud to tell about their experience of going to help plant to re-forest their mountains last August after the terrible storm dropped so many trees.

Many of the children get so enthusiastic at the presentations in every school that they say they would like to study biology or agronomy, in order to get to know much more about nature and its science - so, perhaps Journey North might be even inspiring some future professions among these children and some generations!
