Gregorio Torres Quintero Elementary, Grades 2, 3, and 4 Practically all of these children’s families live partly from agriculture, but mainly from forest-logging. In the last three years, these forest areas have been severely logged illegally causing a great concern to organisms and institutions caring for Monarchs’ habitat. In this region, surrounding the sanctuaries there is so much natural beauty. However, the schools teach so little about this relationship between people and their environment. Journey North visits are doing our best to teach students a little bit about the delicate relationship between their surroundings and the survival of the monarch butterfly. Most often children are raised to learn the different aspects about their parents’ (boys from fathers), ways to work at home relating to agriculture, cattle care and some forest activities according to home and family needs. Unfortunately forests and other natural resources in our region’s culture seems to be taken for granted, even in a major part of our nowadays generations, in spite of wide campaigns all over pro-nature care. In this classroom, a child named Juan Antonio, 7 years old, is often sitting at the teacher’s desk seen at the photos. He has a physical disability. In the State of Michoacán, there is no special assistance in education for children who have got a disability, so Juan Antonio spends much of his time learning what he can next to the teacher.
