Octavio Paz Middle School
Octavio Paz is located in Palo Amarillo Community, Ejido Palo Amarillo, State of México bordering area. This is in the second belt sheltering surrounding territory to Sanctuary Sierra Chincua. Among the schools visited by Journey North, only 3 middle schools are visited due to their strategic location to the Sanctuaries.

Middle schools students start school at 8 a.m. and end at 2 p.m. They attend subjects like Maths, Spanish, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, English, Mexican History, Geography. After 3 years attending Middle level, will go onto High school. Even though they learn environmental issues in the classroom, the message delivered this year by Journey North about characteristics of a healthy forest is a good addition to their studies.

All this facts make them immediately reflect and comment how they’ve seen, at their short age of 12-15 years. In their own village, rivers seeming to dry out, streams and ponds everywhere around where their parents tell them there used to be frogs, toads, salamanders, and some plants species not anymore existing. Perhaps they will be able to apply this knowledge to stop any non-reversible damage in their native forests and surrounding lands.

Some students after the presentation were busy working on a project consisting on processing one of the most common seasonal local fruit (Christmas fruit), --Tejocotes-- into marmalade, which they seem to enjoy and takes them out of their classroom activities.
