Symbolic Monarchs in Mexico

Benito Juárez Elementary School, Grades K-6
Benito Juárez is located in Las Jaras Community, Ejido Angangueo. It is in the very first belt surrounding territory to "Sierra Chincua" Sanctuary.

This school is a Multi-grade, or Unigrade school, where a single teacher, in a single room, teaches kindergarten, and another single teacher, in a single classroom, teaches 1st to 6th grades.

That a school gets a teacher per grade, depends on the population of students in the school itself and per each grade. The minimum students for a school to get a teacher per grade, is 10 students.  This school would be far from having this population; the community is rather small.

The photos in general show a beautiful landscape and children were so excited to gather outside in the yard to have our talk and activity!.

These new generations were all born surrounded by Monarchs but their education is not included. Very few teachers have the will to approach the topic on their own while in the classroom.  Unfortunately, for generations, the academical education in our system is rather far from experiencing live contact with nature, in spite of us all living in this region which would be the perfect surrounding for such an ideal complement.

Most families to these children, not to say all, practice agricultural activities. Because of the steepness of the mountains in this area, this allows for little choice of where else to practice their harvesting activities, and this represents a high risk of landslides to the region, specially to Angangueo town, which is at the very bottom of the canyon in the mountain-chain around, as it already happened in 2010.

Estela stresses the importance of keeping our forests tight populated in order to assure habitat for Monarchs and many other species in our region. This habitat acts as a barrier of great protection against wind, hail, droughts, land-slides and many other natural events and phenomenons which might cause very serious destruction to their harvesting areas, homes, animal species, etc.
