Symbolic Monarchs in Mexico

Pedro Ascencio Elementary School, Grades 1-6
Pedro Ascencio Elementary is located in Garatachea Community, Ejido “Los Remedios” and Ejido “Cerro Prieto”. It is in the very First belt surrounding territory to Sanctuary "Sierra Chincua.

This school was among the very first schools visited when the Journey North program started. This has been a Uni-grade school, for about 20 years, and now, teacher Juan, has an additional teacher since the population of the school increased a little bit with some more children.  Now 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grades are in a separate classroom from 4th, 5th, and 6th grades.

Some of the photos from this school shows the new dining room totally finished now. The school day here starts at 9 a.m., students break to have a simple meal at 2 p.m, and then classes continue until 4 p.m!  A great majority of our children may make a rather poor breakfast at home, so to have to wait until 2-3 p.m. to have dinne at home, leaves children hungry at school and not able to learn. So, it is fantastic to see the school supporting a new lunchroom to help give kids good nutrition.

The center of such initiative like the dinning room at these schools, has to do with a teachers-parents real interest and enthusiasm to get it for their children. Mostly such a project is not easy to reach since one of the parties might not be really willing to compromise themselves with acquiring the obligation to run it. The financing of such projects is mostly available on the State’s side, and it is on teachers’ and parents to pursue it.

It is 2 p.m. and the time for a hot pasta soup, chicharron con chile verde and some beans beside with two or three tortillas to go, makes the time at school for this children motivating and an extension of the feeling or being at home! This is the only school in the region, where such a nice and excellent service dining room is running!

A beautiful landscape painted at the wall  of the dinning room by a brother in law of teacher Juan, --who teaches at the “Octavio Paz” elementary--, inspires children about the praise of their own natural landscape surrounding them!
