Guadalupe Victoria Elementary, Grades 4, 5, and 6
The letters of goodwill and Monarchs conservation, has begun with the first school visits. Journey North starts visiting those schools nearest to the Sanctuaries, and gradually goes around to those further around. Guadalupe Victoria is one of the three closest schools to El Rosario Sanctuary. In this school as in many others, the change of improvement in the facilities over the last few years is surprising. All over in our country, the State has been lately providing programs on budget for it. It depends mainly on the Director at each school to apply for such chances. Nowadays classrooms, bathrooms, yard, wáter-drinking stations and and power supply are functional.

Journey North’s message of Monarchs’ Habitat Conservation this year makes children reflect on the richness of their local ecosystem. They learn about the different tree species and common names accompanying the Oyamel tree at Monarchs’ overwintering sites in our forests. They also reflect on the importance of the great variety of mushrooms growing in it and the high importance of them enriching the soil and hábitat in general for the whole local ecosystem.

In total, students are amazed about the treasure enclosed in our forests and the way Monarchs’s habitat and we as inhabitants in the región are impacting their survival. They show themselves highly proud of the knowledge their parents and grandparents have passed on to them in terms of names of plants, animals and hábitat in general of their own land.

The group photos with these classrooms was incredible too. Both the director and teachers showed themselves so very delighted to have us come one more year.

Most of these students' parents and grandparents are Ejidatarios and most make a living, many directly, others indirectly, from the Sanctuaries and tourism. Families have almost finished corn harvesting in their farms; next, they will look for an extra-income for their families at the Sanctuaries.
